Program Development

The success of local basketball starts with the commitment of the community and younger players to development.

Ralph Labella and Mark Pearson are running the 5th grade development program Sunday afternoons at 5 P.M. on the courts at the Common. They stress conditioning, fundamentals, and skill development through drills.

This week's session will be held MONDAY (Memorial Day) instead of Sunday as presumably that will allow for families to return from the long weekend.

The Old and The New

Where are they going? Six seniors graduated from the Melrose basketball program, although Meg Shea counts as a seventh, as she passed on basketball this season to concentrate on field hockey, earning a scholarship to the University of New Hampshire.

Samantha Bell - University of New Hampshire
Maura Coveney - Northeastern
Cara Lynch - Boston College
Karen Sen - Dartmouth
Paula Sen - Dartmouth
Ana Tocco - Providence College

Meanwhile, many of the Lady Raider returnees are playing AAU. Some local basketball pundits describe the graduating eighth grade class as the deepest in Melrose history, and Ralph LaBella and Mark Pearson are conducting 'skill-building' sessions for current 5th graders on Sundays, focusing on developing fundamental skills.

This Sunday the Lady Raiders will hold an appreciation Car Wash from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Melrose High School parking lot.
