7 out of 8 with 53-40 Win Over Spy Ponders

Melrose hosted Arlington for the first time since their entry into the Middlesex League, and emerged with a 53-40 win for their 7th win in the last eight outings. The victory moves the Lady Raiders to 8-5 and within two wins for post-season play.

The first period was largely nightmarish, with a 9-4 deficit on one for twelve shooting and seven turnovers. The scoring drought continued into the half with the Lady Raiders struggling with the half-court offense en route to a 20-17 deficit. Brooke Bell and Lia Limone led with five apiece at the break.

Melrose dialed up the defensive intensity and went off the reservation with free lance and transition offense to go up 33-27 with balanced scoring.

The hosts put the game away early in the fourth, with a pair of treys from Lia, and eight free throws from Lia and Sydney Doherty amidst twenty fourth period tallies.

Lia led with eighteen points, Kayla Wyland had eleven off the bench, and unofficially Melrose had only four second half turnovers.

Game Analysis: Melrose's backcourt superiority, coupled with foul trouble for the Arlington point guard doomed Arlington. Melrose was as cold as ice from the floor in the first half (6-30), but put up thirty-six points in the second half to get a late January thaw.

More than anything else, better basketball away from half-court sets and fewer turnovers have rejuvenated the offense and restored enthusiasm to the court.

Ranked

Danny Ventura's Boston Herald blog ranks boys and girls teams by both division and geographically.

Melrose (7-5) has won six of its last seven and is ranked sixth in D2 North. The bigger issue is that the Lady Raiders have played better basketball, reducing turnovers, and as a result, scored more consistently.

Here's the rest of the regular season schedule...starting with a two game home stand.

Offensive Output Lifts Lady Raiders 67-45

Melrose won its sixth game in seven, bringing its record to 7-5 with a big home victory over Belmont.

Melrose breached the sixty mark for the first time in two years, as ten players scored and Melrose finished strong.

Brooke Bell got Melrose out quickly with a seventeen point first, with a pair of treys and balanced scoring to lead 17-11. By half-time, Melrose led by 12, 33-21 behind a dozen Bell tallies and five apiece from Lia Limone and Jill Slabacheski.

Melrose and Belmont each added twelve in the third, before Melrose completed the rout with an 18-8 final period. Brooke finished with 18 points and Lia with thirteen, including eight in the fourth.

Game Analysis: Melrose started a three game homestand with an offensive surge that included at least sixteen points in each period. Better possessions, balanced scoring, and reducing turnovers produced better quality hoop.

Win over Winchester Breaks .500 Record

Melrose has quietly won five of six games, defeating Winchester (2-8) 49-27 to bring its record to 6-5.

Melrose saw 10 players score en route to the easy win.

Melrose took an 11-8 lead after the first period thanks to balanced scoring, including an early three for Shannon Lahiff, as Melrose fired in seven threes for the game.

Melrose opened up a 21-11 lead by halftime with good defense, but committed seventeen first half turnovers.

The Lady Raiders put away the game with a 19-7 third frame, highlighted by a quartet of threes including one from Lia Limone and Jill Slabacheski, and a pair by Shannon.

The fourth stanza was garbage time, as each team put up nine points. Melrose took a lot better care of the ball in the second half, with just seven turnovers.

Game analysis: The ball wouldn't drop early, but ultimately the Lady Raiders rained a parade of threes on the Sachems, in their most comfortable win of the year.

Lia Limone had eleven points to lead the scoring, adding five assists, and Shannon Lahiff chipped in nine points on a trio of treys.

If Melrose turns the corner on turnover limitation, taking care of the ball ("the ball is gold"), they have the capacity for a very successful 2011-2012.

Halfway Done, Halfway Won, Melrose 39 Watertown 35

Melrose hosted Watertown (7-2) and Melrose's experience carried them past the young visitors 39-35, to even their record at 5-5.

Melrose needed to rebound from last week's disappointing loss to Stoneham, and came out playing aggressive defense, but struggled under the burden of turnovers. The offense showed some rust, scoreless for almost the first three minutes, followed by some inside work by Jill Slabacheski and Kayla Wyland. But the key to the game, was Brooke Bell's stifling defense on last year's top ML rookie, Gabriella Coppola. Bell stymied Coppola's penetration and dish game and the Watertown star was held far below her usual average. Melrose led 14-11 after one.

The second stanza saw some stagnation of the Melrose offense, as they scored a solitary hoop on a Rachel Johnson jumper, while Kayla Wyland went 5-6 from the line en route to 9 first half points. Melrose led 21-15 at halftime, over the 'diaper dandies' of Watertown, which had four frosh and a pair of sophomores among their top six.

Watertown crept closer in the third, as Melrose continued a scoring drought. Melrose led 29-25 after three.

The fourth period had more energy and both teams battled for possible victory. Bell continued to hound Coppola, and Shannon Lahiff hit a key trey to give Melrose a five point lead late. Watertown brought it to within three, but Melrose was able to convert a late free throw for the final 39-35 margin. Kayla Wyland put up a career high fourteen points and did some good work on the boards.

Game Analysis: Melrose was able to contain the turnovers after a slow start, but  the key to the game was aggressive defense, holding a potent Watertown offense down via good transition defense and individual defensive achievement from Brooke Bell. On the front end, Kayla Wyland's tenacity and touch provided the margin of victory.

Do You Know?

Cross-posted from Melrosegirlsbasketball.com.

Above all, we want our players to know the game and play the game right. There's a lot to know and learn, and a lot of ways to "do the next right thing right".

Our players should know, as in being able to explain and demonstrate how basketball fundamentals, and sometimes rule changes impact how the game is played. For example, the introduction and changes in the shot clock and the three-point shot produced profound changes in basketball strategy and tactics.

Friday the Thirteenth, Melrose Falls 38-34

Melrose traveled to Stoneham for a key tilt in the ML small division against Stoneham and came away on the short end 38-34. As a result the team drops to 4-5.

The game had a multiple personality disorder flavor to it, as the Lady Raiders played some of their best basketball of the season in the first period, racing out to a 19-12 first period lead with good ball movement, including crisp passing and only a pair of turnovers. The offensive outburst came off transition and freelance offense with good cutting and passing.

Then the wheels came off the wagon, as though a herd of black cats, broken mirrors, and ladders to be walked under appeared, although Melrose did manage to hold a four point half time (27-23) lead spurred on by ten points by Brooke Bell, five from Shannon Lahiff, and six from Jenny McGee.

Melrose came out quickly with a pair of hoops to go up eight, 31-23, and then inexplicably went into the most profound scoring funk in recent memory, as the team scored only three points in the final fourteen and a half minutes, largely attributable to a river of second half turnovers.

Melrose still managed a 31-28 lead after three, but nothing went right offensively after the two early hoops.

The fourth period saw Stoneham score an occasional hoop, and Melrose struggle in every imaginable way, including free throw shooting, although our biggest downfall was a total absence of field goals after the two early ones in the third frame.

Game analysis: If quality basketball starts with defense, then Melrose achieved some of its goals, holding Stoneham to fewer than forty points. But every team must generate some offense, even when the defense holds up. The half-court offense using a three-out two in 'scripted motion' or the one-four, double high post generated few quality possessions, so it's back to the drawing board.

50 Percent not Half Bad, Melrose Tames Cats 56-41

Melrose evened its record at 4-4 with a solid win over Wilmington which came in at 6-2.

Melrose came out fast going up 13-6 led by 5 first period points by Brooke Bell. The Lady Raiders went up 21-14 late in the half on a 3 point play by Katie Sullivan only to surrender three on a foul on a three point play.

A big first half with 8 points by Lia Limone (16) sparked Melrose.

Melrose gradually extended their lead after the break, with solid play from Jenny McGee, with 9 points, Shannon Lahiff with 10, and Brooke Bell with 13. A 19-11 fourth period outburst iced the cake.

ANALYSIS - three factors keyed the win - solid defense with consistent ball pressure, reduced turnovers (17) that allowed more shots, and generally improved shooting, a combination of better shot selection and a good shooting night. Particularly impressive was putting up 56 points with Sydney Doherty still out with injury.

Melrose faces Stoneham Friday as they attempt to break through the 50 percent mark and remain atop the Middlesex League Small Division.

Consecutive Wins Bring Melrose to 3-4

Following an 0-3 start, Melrose has won 3 of 4 with a 47-35 Alumnae Night win over Wakefield.

Melrose came out fast behind balance first period scoring en route to a 12-3 lead, which they extended to 14-3 early in the second stanza. A pair of Brooke Bell (14) drives and a pretty step back jumper by Lia Limone were key.

Prosperity proved ephemeral, as Wakefield rallied back, but the young Warriors struggled with turnovers and poor shooting, trailing 19-11 at the half. Bell led with 8 points, but seven other Lady Raiders got on the board.

Wakefield hung in during the third period, getting as close as 30-24, but a late flurry keyed Melrose. Jenny McGee sparked the rally with quality, straight up interior play, with Shannon Lahiff delivering some key entry passes. At the end of three, Melrose extended the lead to 35-24. Lia added a pair of treys in the flurry.

Melrose kept the game under control in the fourth, and closed out the Warriors with steady defense.

Brooke led with 14 points, Lia had 10, and Jenny 9. But McGee's toughness inside on the boards was more of a factor on the outcome than the points, as she likely had double digit rebounds.

Game analysis: Three factors led to success tonight. First, the overall defense, especially ball pressure and consistent help on the pick and roll had an impact. Second, Melrose rebounded more effectively than in the past. Third, improved passing created better scoring opportunities. For average shooting teams, creative passing sets up easier shots, leading to higher shooting percentage.

Coaching Traits

John Wooden’s Desirable Coaching Traits

  1. Attentiveness to Detail You must prepare to win in order to be a winner.  Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.
  2. Impartiality This is a must, but you must remember that you must not treat everyone alike as they are all different.  Give each one the treatment earned and deserved.
  3. Teaching Skill It isn’t enough that you know the game, you must be able to teach it.  Follow the laws of learning.
  4. Discipline Most essential for proper concentration and group organization.
  5. Affability The coach must be of an affable disposition because of the various groups with who he must associate.
  6. Forcefulness You must be firm without being bullheaded.
  7. Alertness Constant observation of all going on around and about are necessary for improved learning and decision making.
  8. Optimism The pessimist isn’t likely to produce a confident team that will play near to their full capability.
  9. Desire to Improve Lack of ambition will result in complacency and laziness.
  10. Vision A Picture of the possible must be shown to your players to provide a goal for them.
  11. Consideration For Others You must be truly considerate of others if you expect them to be considerate of you.  You must listen to them if you want them to listen to you.
  12. Resourcefulness You must be ever ready to make necessary adjustments according to the situation and the personnel that you have available.
  13. Cooperativeness An essential for all who work with others and are dependent on others in various ways.
  14. Leadership Trust be commanded, not demanded.  Others are working with you, not for you.  Be interested in finding the best way rather than having your own way.
  15. Industriousness There is no substitute for work.  Worthwhile things should never be easy to attain.
  16. Enthusiasm If you are to stimulate others, your heart must be in your work. Enthusiasm brushes off upon those with whom you come in contact.
  17. Sympathy You must be truly interested in those under your supervision and be sympathetic with their problems.
  18. Self-control Good judgment must be exercised in your decisions and they must be made through reason not emotion.
  19. Sincerity Insincerity can be spotted very quickly and cause loss of respect.

A Heads Up Play

Sometimes we can be critical of plays that lack "situational basketball" sense.  We expect players to be aware of the score, time, situation, and needs to DO THE RIGHT NEXT THING RIGHT.

Burlington had the ball with about 20 seconds to go, trailing 49-46 last night. Brooke Bell pressured the ball leading to a turnover and got it to Shannon Lahiff in the frontcourt with perhaps 13 or 14 seconds. Instead of trying to score, she dribbled away from the basket, burned clock, got fouled and made a pair of free throws to ice the game.

She made the right play at the right time.

Devils Dogged, Melrose 51-48

Melrose traveled to Burlington and earned a hard-fought 51-48 win, their second of the season (2-4).

Melrose faced a must win situation, coming in 0-3 in the Middlesex League.

Melrose got off to a quick 4-0 start behind four quick points from Jenny McGee. But Burlington responded, and the teams traded first period baskets. Melrose closed it out leading 14-10 with balanced scoring.

The Lady Raiders opened it up somewhat to lead 27-20 behind more offense from Jenny McGee (9) and Sydney Doherty (5), who played injured and sustained additional injury of an unspecified nature during the game. Jenny also picked up her defense in the second stanza.

Melrose couldn't extend the lead in the third, and Burlington narrowed the lead to 2 (36-34) after three. Shannon Lahiff had her career high (9) including 7 critical third quarter points.

Burlington never quit, but couldn't grab the lead in the period. Melrose got eight key points from Brooke Bell (11) as well as three from Jill Slabacheski in the fourth to walk out with the victory.

Game analysis: With only a half from Sydney, Melrose needed balanced scoring  and reached the fifty point mark for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Lia Limone added six key points and down the stretch Shannon Lahiff hit a pair of key free throws to ice the win. For the most part Melrose has shot well from the line, but struggled a bit with 12-24 tonight.

Melrose hosts Wakefield Friday in another critical matchup.

Cross Post from MelroseGirlsBasketball.com

"That which we are we are, and if we are to be any better, now is the time to begin." - Tennyson

Melrose comes into tonight's contest against Burlington at 1-4. With a quarter of the regular season history, the Lady Raiders have a chance to regroup and put forth solutions. It's process before results, as John Wooden's video (yesterday) illustrated.

How can we improve today? Are we committed to make a difference?  One play can make the difference.
