Hill of Beans?

Preseason polls are just that...preseason and opinions. Beantownhoops.com published their list of girls' and boys' rankings...and Melrose doesn't get any love.
Well, they do give a lot of consideration to the city teams...

Tryouts

The Lady Raiders will seek to recapture the Middlesex League title and go deep into the playoffs. A number of returning and less established players have worked out regularly as they prepare for tryouts that begin tomorrow.

The team has a strong core, with returning starters/captains Hannah Brickley, Colleen Hanscom, Laura Irwin, and Siena Mamayek.

Coach Rob Ferrante will have plenty of options going forward with a veteran team and young players hungry to contribute in the future.

Basketball - Volleyball Crossover

The Lady Raiders have had a considerable cross-pollination between the basketball program and the volleyball team. Both sports share the need for hand-eye coordination, athleticism, and height doesn't hurt.

Many members from the recent D2 North Championship team compete on bouth courts. Division 2 Player of the Year Hannah Brickley, as well as Colleen Hanscom, Laura Irwin, and Siena Mamayek are all basketball captains. Other important members of both programs (that I know of) include Annemarie Wiesen, Alex Harlow, Athena Ziavras, Jill Slabacheski, Allysa DiRaffaele, Brooke Bell, and Amanda Commito.

Alumnae Action

Several former Lady Raiders are off to good starts this season.

Former Middlesex League MVP Meg Kirwan, a sophomore at UMASS Lowell, had 13 points off the bench for the River Hawks in a preseason game. Here's a preview of the River Hawks. Meg had a solid freshman campaign and will compete for a starting spot this season.

Lynley D'Amato, a former All-League player with the Lady Raiders, took a couple of years off from basketball, but earned a starting guard spot for UMASS Dartmouth. She scored 22 points in her first college game against Westfield State.

Many of the Lady Raiders basketball team will be playing in the Division 2 North Volleyball semifinals tomorrow night at Newton South.
