50 Percent not Half Bad, Melrose Tames Cats 56-41

Melrose evened its record at 4-4 with a solid win over Wilmington which came in at 6-2.

Melrose came out fast going up 13-6 led by 5 first period points by Brooke Bell. The Lady Raiders went up 21-14 late in the half on a 3 point play by Katie Sullivan only to surrender three on a foul on a three point play.

A big first half with 8 points by Lia Limone (16) sparked Melrose.

Melrose gradually extended their lead after the break, with solid play from Jenny McGee, with 9 points, Shannon Lahiff with 10, and Brooke Bell with 13. A 19-11 fourth period outburst iced the cake.

ANALYSIS - three factors keyed the win - solid defense with consistent ball pressure, reduced turnovers (17) that allowed more shots, and generally improved shooting, a combination of better shot selection and a good shooting night. Particularly impressive was putting up 56 points with Sydney Doherty still out with injury.

Melrose faces Stoneham Friday as they attempt to break through the 50 percent mark and remain atop the Middlesex League Small Division.
