Consecutive Wins Bring Melrose to 3-4

Following an 0-3 start, Melrose has won 3 of 4 with a 47-35 Alumnae Night win over Wakefield.

Melrose came out fast behind balance first period scoring en route to a 12-3 lead, which they extended to 14-3 early in the second stanza. A pair of Brooke Bell (14) drives and a pretty step back jumper by Lia Limone were key.

Prosperity proved ephemeral, as Wakefield rallied back, but the young Warriors struggled with turnovers and poor shooting, trailing 19-11 at the half. Bell led with 8 points, but seven other Lady Raiders got on the board.

Wakefield hung in during the third period, getting as close as 30-24, but a late flurry keyed Melrose. Jenny McGee sparked the rally with quality, straight up interior play, with Shannon Lahiff delivering some key entry passes. At the end of three, Melrose extended the lead to 35-24. Lia added a pair of treys in the flurry.

Melrose kept the game under control in the fourth, and closed out the Warriors with steady defense.

Brooke led with 14 points, Lia had 10, and Jenny 9. But McGee's toughness inside on the boards was more of a factor on the outcome than the points, as she likely had double digit rebounds.

Game analysis: Three factors led to success tonight. First, the overall defense, especially ball pressure and consistent help on the pick and roll had an impact. Second, Melrose rebounded more effectively than in the past. Third, improved passing created better scoring opportunities. For average shooting teams, creative passing sets up easier shots, leading to higher shooting percentage.
