Devils Dogged, Melrose 51-48

Melrose traveled to Burlington and earned a hard-fought 51-48 win, their second of the season (2-4).

Melrose faced a must win situation, coming in 0-3 in the Middlesex League.

Melrose got off to a quick 4-0 start behind four quick points from Jenny McGee. But Burlington responded, and the teams traded first period baskets. Melrose closed it out leading 14-10 with balanced scoring.

The Lady Raiders opened it up somewhat to lead 27-20 behind more offense from Jenny McGee (9) and Sydney Doherty (5), who played injured and sustained additional injury of an unspecified nature during the game. Jenny also picked up her defense in the second stanza.

Melrose couldn't extend the lead in the third, and Burlington narrowed the lead to 2 (36-34) after three. Shannon Lahiff had her career high (9) including 7 critical third quarter points.

Burlington never quit, but couldn't grab the lead in the period. Melrose got eight key points from Brooke Bell (11) as well as three from Jill Slabacheski in the fourth to walk out with the victory.

Game analysis: With only a half from Sydney, Melrose needed balanced scoring  and reached the fifty point mark for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Lia Limone added six key points and down the stretch Shannon Lahiff hit a pair of key free throws to ice the win. For the most part Melrose has shot well from the line, but struggled a bit with 12-24 tonight.

Melrose hosts Wakefield Friday in another critical matchup.
